A modern day spin on a classic folktale, beautifully illustrated by Jan Brett. Nikki begged his baba to make him a brand new pair of mittens that were white as snow. But when Nikki drops one of his new white mittens in the snow, he goes on without seeing it had fallen. One by one woodland animals stumble across it and begin to crawl inside. First, a curious mole burrow in, then a rabbit, a badger, and others, each larger than the last. Finally, a big brown bear is followed in by a tiny brown mouse, and what happens next makes for a wonderfully hilarious sight.
As the story of the animals in the mitten unfolds, the reader can see Nikki in the borders of each page, walking through the woods, unaware of what is going on. This traditional Ukrainian tale is given new life in this charmingly illustrated and retold version, true to Ukrainian folk style.
